At ANZBIG (Australia New Zealand Biochar Industry Group), we believe biochar is the key to revolutionizing how we manage waste, enhance soil health, and combat climate change. And now, we’re asking for your help to accelerate this transformation through our 2024/25 Kick Starter Crowdfunding Campaign.
The Potential of Biochar
Biochar is more than just a byproduct; it’s a game-changing solution that holds the potential to:
- Produce 15 million tonnes of biochar annually
- Sequester 37.5 million tonnes of harmful CO2 emissions, equivalent to 10% of Australia’s annual emissions
- Create a $1 billion industry and generate 10,000 new jobs
- Progress 14 of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals, including climate action, clean water, and sustainable agriculture
Biochar is not just a product; it’s a catalyst for positive environmental change.
Why We Need Your Support
We’re a group of passionate volunteers leading the charge, but to fully unlock biochar’s incredible potential, we need more resources. Our goal is to raise a ~AUD 3 million annual budget, allowing us to:
- Hire project officers to focus on research, innovation, and market development
- Implement biochar initiatives on a large scale
- Attract long-term funding to build a self-sustaining biochar industry
By contributing to our campaign, every dollar will go towards immediate initiatives that create momentum, generate impact, and help establish biochar as a foundational element in environmental sustainability.
Achievements So Far
Since launching our roadmap in June 2023, we’ve already made significant strides, including:
- Hosting five state forums with 400+ registrations across Australia and New Zealand
- Establishing six working groups and recruiting 70 volunteers dedicated to areas like resourcing, education, market development, and innovation
- Producing a Farmers Guide for Biochar, offering comprehensive insights into biochar’s production and application for agricultural use
- Supporting an Expression of Interest (EOI) for the inclusion of biochar in the ACCU (Australian Carbon Credit Units) scheme
- Strengthening partnerships, including an MOU with AORA and WSAA
