Australian Biochar Industry 2030 Roadmap

The ANZBIG Biochar Industry 2030 Roadmap is our blueprint for scaling biochar into a $1 billion industry that permanently removes 15 million tonnes of CO?-e each year. Developed with input from government, industry, and research leaders, it maps the policies, projects, and partnerships needed to unlock biochar’s full potential in climate policy, agriculture, waste recovery, industry innovation, and regional economies.

Our 2030 Targets:

  • 15 million tonnes of biochar produced annually

  • 37.5 million tonnes of CO?-e removed

  • $1 billion industry value

  • 10,000 regional jobs created

  • Contribution to 14 of the UN Sustainable Development Goals

Through 10 strategic initiatives, the roadmap turns vision into action—building national awareness, setting technical standards, driving innovation, and creating thousands of regional jobs while restoring soils and supporting climate goals.

Roadmap Themes

The 10 Roadmap Initiatives

ANZBIG’s 10 Roadmap Initiatives are the practical actions driving biochar from vision to reality across Australia and New Zealand. They span the full value chain — from building national awareness and technical standards, to embedding biochar in government policy, scaling commercial pilots, and advancing carbon credit methodologies.

Each initiative is led by dedicated working groups, bringing together industry, researchers, councils, and government to accelerate adoption, secure investment, and deliver measurable climate, soil, and economic benefits. Together, they create the framework for a $1 billion industry, 15 Mt CO?-e sequestration, and thousands of regional jobs by 2030.

“We pledge to build a safe and sustainable biochar industry in Australia.

We know that valuable Australian biomass resources are being wasted each year which could be converted to energy and bioproducts that count towards Australias Net Zero Economy.

We know that a scale up of the sustainable production and use of biochar will boost
the Australian Net Zero Economy significantly.

We pledge to support ANZBIG in delivering the Australian 2030 Biochar Industry Roadmap for all Australians.”
