New NGER Amendment Brings Biosolids-to-Biochar into National Reporting Scheme
We are excited to share a landmark update from the Clean Energy Regulator — the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting (NGER) Measurement Amendment (2025 Update) now includes biosolids-to-biochar as a recognised emissions reduction pathway.
Effective 1 July 2025 (for reports due 31 October 2026), wastewater operators can officially account for:
Tonnes of biosolids transferred to biochar production
COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) in sludge diverted
Associated emissions reductions
Why this matters:
Elevates biochar’s commercial and environmental credibility
Enables water corporations, councils, and technology providers to meet regulatory requirements with confidence
Opens pathways for integration with ACCU carbon credit methodologies
“This latest development offers a structured, compliant means to demonstrate emissions reductions from biosolids reuse and circular economy practices.” - Don Coyne, CEO, ANZBIG
