Advancing the Biochar Industry: The Power of Technology...
The Australia & NZ Biochar Industry Group (ANZBIG) mission is to remove 10% of Australia’s carbon emissions while supporting the Australian economy, becoming a multibillion-dollar industry by 2030. This will occur by transforming waste to biochar for multiple agricultural and industrial applications and at the same time, producing renewable energy. To achieve this goal, ANZBIG relies on crowdfunding donations and two major industry leaders—Metamorf Engineering and Rainbow Bee Eater (RBE) have kickstarted the crowdfunding campaign.
If you would like to contribute positively to the industry and benefit in the process, please join ANZBIG here on the crowdfund or become a member.
Rainbow Bee Eater
Melbourne-based Rainbow Bee Eater (RBE) in June 2024 installed the updated Mark 4 ECHO2 biochar and syngas system at Holla-Fresh in Tantanoola South Australia. At Holla- Fresh, local wood residues are converted to syngas which replaces LPG heating for the 1HA Holla-Fresh herb growing glasshouse and biochar and wood vinegar sold to customers for applications in agriculture and horticulture.
RBE is also installing six Mark 4 ECHO2 biochar and syngas systems at Katunga Fresh in Katunga Victoria. At Katunga Fresh, expected on line later in 2024, large square bales of local straw will be converted to syngas which replaces natural gas heating for the 21HA tomato growing glasshouse and biochar and wood vinegar sold to customers for applications in
agriculture and horticulture.
RBE and their sales and distribution partner Optimal Group Australia have a number of other syngas and biochar projects in the pipeline expected to reach a financial investment decision (FID) in the coming months. RBE achieved an Australian first by selling Puro-certified biochar CORCs (carbon dioxide
removal certificates) to Microsoft, Shopify and several other international buyers. The CORC revenue enables low-cost biochar supply to those markets - enabling scale-up of carbon dioxide removal.
Metamorf Engineering
Metamorf Engineering (incorporating SDA Engineering) have more than 26 years of experience in clean energy and co-generation including 14 years in designing and installing biochar production systems. Metamorf are very experienced with leading technical engineering and know-how to bring biochar projects to life, providing comprehensive full turnkey solutions from initial design and technical engineering, through to supply, construction, installation, project management, and ongoing solution support and maintenance.
Metamorf’s CharcellTM technology has been installed in multiple projects in Australia and New Zealand, operating on Almond Hull and Woodchip processing 5000 tpa of feedstock. A CharcellTM Three utilising straw to provide biochar in cereal farming is currently in production, and many more for a variety of clients with a wide range of feedstocks are in the pipeline ready for rollout. For larger capacity projects we offer our CharcellTM Four, where each containerised module provides 20,000 tpa of waste throughput, while producing over 4MW of heat to replace fossil fuels.
Both the Charcell Three and Charcell Four have lucrative returns with 3 revenue streams: biochar, CORCs and heat. Charcell has low capital and operating costs which provides exceptional client investment payback opportunities.
